TD Bank

Commerce Bank (later acquired by TD Bank) commissioned MTFA Architecture to design a new bank building in the historic Georgetown neighborhood after repeated failed attempts to get design approval from various review agencies. MTFA’s approved design pays tribute to the historic context with a contemporary design that serves the bank’s programmatic needs.

The site is located at a corner on Wisconsin Avenue, one of the prominent streets that bisects Georgetown and is viewed by the Commission of Fine Arts as the portal to the historic district. MTFA was careful to respect the rhythms and proportions of historic Georgetown while designing the building. The Wisconsin Avenue façade reflects the architectural vocabulary of the neighboring town homes by incorporating deep masonry punched openings, double bays, and articulated brick detailing. The side elevation, visible from Georgetown’s commercial district, pulls from the texture of Georgetown’s historic alleyways by layering building trellises and landscaping while maximizing the bank’s requirement for visibility with a two-story undulating glass wall.
