Arlington County
Tyrol Hill Park

MTFA collaborated with Arlington County Parks and Recreation, the surrounding community, and engineers to develop a phased renovation solution addressing the communities’ multi-generational needs of Tyrol Hill Park. The two-acre park serves the Forest Glen and Arlington Mill neighborhoods in South Arlington, Virginia, and connects to the Four Mile Run nature trails.

A new butterfly roof pavilion anchors the southern end of the park and provides a focal sculptural element. The pavilion includes a covered outdoor picnic area with a community table, gender-neutral accessible restrooms, and storage. Designed to maximize natural daylight in the restrooms, the structure uses water-sense plumbing fixtures. The butterfly roof is designed and oriented to support future photovoltaic panels. User-level glazed masonry provides a durable and clean finish. Natural wood siding and structural elements contribute a feeling of warmth and a connection to the adjacent wooded area.

Additional features include a new futsal field, basketball courts, open green space, a playground, and a covered picnic structure. The renovated park contributed to Arlington County being recognized by USA Today as one of the top 5 cities in the US with the best park systems..
